Cacao: Medicine of the Heart

I truly believe cacao is one of the greatest gifts the Earth has ever offered us.

Yes, it's delicious. In fact, I genuinely think it's one of the most incredible foods on the planet. Rich in minerals and naturally nourishing, ceremonial cacao supports the body. But for me, it has always been so much more than that.

It is a medicine for the heart.

For thousands of years, cacao has been honoured throughout Central and South America as a sacred plant. Many Indigenous cultures worked with cacao in ritual, ceremony and offerings, recognising it as the Food of the Gods. It was also highly valued and even used as a form of currency.

Today, people all over the world continue to work with ceremonial cacao in many different ways. While modern cacao ceremonies have evolved over time, they are inspired by the deep reverence Indigenous cultures have held for this remarkable plant for thousands of years.

A cacao ceremony is a sacred space where we weave together intention and the wisdom of the Earth. It is an invitation to return to the heart. To slow down. To remember the language of the forest.

We gather in sacred circle, share a cup of ceremonial cacao, and create space to simply be. There are countless ways to work with cacao, and no two ceremonies are ever the same. Every circle has its own energy, and every person will receive exactly what they need in that moment.

Cacao opens the door to magic, but it is your intention that decides what walks through.

Unlike many plant medicines, cacao has a soft and gentle presence. It doesn't demand your attention; rather, it invites you to tune in. In my experience, it is often through simplicity that the deepest transformations occur. A gentle shift in perspective. A feeling in the body. A quiet knowing. A spark of creativity.

Cacao doesn't tell us what to do. Instead, it creates the space for us to hear what our own heart has been trying to say all along. It reminds us not to take life so seriously and invites creativity, laughter, connection and joy alongside reflection, intention and healing.

I am drawn to cacao because of its healing properties, its heart-opening nature, its playful trickster spirit, and the overwhelming feelings of love, joy and connection it so often awakens. To me, cacao is a gentle reminder of our own inner knowing and innate wisdom. It doesn't give us anything that wasn't already there; it simply helps us remember.

Every ceremony is unique because every group brings its own energy. Somehow, cacao has a beautiful way of gathering the people who are meant to share the experience. We laugh together. Sometimes we shed a tear together. We move, we breathe, we soften, and we allow ourselves to be present with whatever arises. We witness one another. And we leave remembering that none of us walks this journey alone and that beneath all of our stories, we are far more connected than we often realise.

I feel immense gratitude to Mother Earth for this beautiful plant, to the wisdom keepers who have protected these traditions across generations, and especially to my Cacao Mama, who taught me to approach cacao with humility, reverence and deep respect for the plant kingdom.

Whether this is your first cup or your hundredth, you are warmly welcome.

If you feel the quiet pull towards cacao, I trust there is a reason.

It would be an honour to share this experience with you.

'' Hi lovely Becs, That was an incredible evening. It was the first time I have been to anything like this and I went in with no idea of what to expect, and it turned out to be one of the most memorable and impactful experiences of my life. I’m glad I journaled my journey right away because I’ve gone back to read over it so many times and it continues to bring me comfort & strength.
Like you said it would, the cacao continued working with me for a while there and I wanted to share that I’ve since developed a brand new respect for, appreciation of and connection with nature & plants. I’ve always loved being in nature but I have never before had this sense of recognising it’s unique aliveness/sentience and my own connection to it - a transformative “aha” moment I had during my journey with Cacao.''

Cacao Guardian

I am a Guardian of the precious Cacao Tree. I have planted a Cacao Tree that supports the birthing of a new Cacao forest. Cacao Gardener is a not-for-profit initiative working together to restore a biodiverse, spirited cacao forest. My tree was planted with intention, care, and the vision to provide a thriving spirited home for species, plants, and trees native to Colombia. Let me know if you too would like to weave the dream and plant a cacao tree thus joining a heart centred community.
